Hey You, Money-Maker

Hey You, Money Maker

You, yes you, reading this blog, are you obsessed with monetizing your domain? Do you find yourself placing unlikely advertisements on every inch of your blog until only a small part of the screen remains for the post area itself? Is your blog filled with PayPerPost and ReviewMe entries?

Do you love MONEY more than you do blogging?

Thing is, it is NEVER bad to think about the buckage you earn every single day but not to the extent that you forget about the most important bit of all – blogging itself. Face it, millions of people around the globe blog but only a handful earns beaucoup amounts of cash from it. Not everybody’s cut out to be a blogging millionaire.

The idea for this post came while I was browsing Yahoo news (I told you it’s my new best friend). Late hotelier, Leona Helmsley, who recently passed away left an astounding USD$12 million to her (get this) Maltese named Trouble. Now I have no issues with celebrity dogs getting their own bling-blings, but isn’t $12 million a tad too much for a pooch? Leona Helmsley was known as the “Queen of Mean” and used to be the poster girl for greed due to numerous counts of tax evasion. According to Yahoo news, she was quoted as saying, “Only the little people pay taxes.”

But this is not about taxes or even about Trouble the filthy rich pooch. This is about the love for money. It is every problogger’s aim to earn, but you can’t deny that many focus on the earning bit too much than their readers would like. It’s nice reading reviews every once in a while, but if posts for very single day consist nothing but paid posts, it stops becoming fun.

Every blogger, whether they’re earning from this biz or not, started with a passion for blogging in varying degrees. This passion could either wax or wane, depending on, more than the blogger’s feelings, external factors which come crashing unto the blogger along the way. Earning from your monetization might be one of your end goals, but don’t let it dry up your passion for blogging.

Greed is a negative word for a reason. A person who works 60 hours a week is not greedy, he works hard. But a person who forgets there are things more important than money is what you can call greedy. Unfortunately, if there is something which can kill real passion, it is greed. Sure, you’ll have the drive to update your blog. Sure, you’ll do more maintenance and revamps than the number of fleas on your next door neighbor’s dog. But are you really gaining inner personal satisfaction from it? I’m not talking about material satisfaction here. I’m talking about genuine feeling of personal contentment.

Greed sucks out all the fun in blogging. So remember, even if your blog is focused on monetization, you should never forget how wonderful blogging is and how much you love it or else:

Failure
