Wordpress themes and all that

admin Posted by admin

I spent about 3 hours on Sunday night playing with Chris Murphy’s excellent Lemon & Lime theme and you can see the result of that modding session live on my site now. The previous theme that was up was a mod of Fen’s New Feel theme and I’ll tidy it up and release the mod here within the next few days.

While I’m on the subject of Wordpress themes (seems to be something of a growing habit here at Desperate Curiosity) I came across a note in the 9rules forums discussing site redesign and how long people keep their themes up. Now, everyone will have their opinion but there seems to be three main opinion groups where this is concerned: the opportunists (me) who change themes like the wind, this is probably because they are not coders or designers and therefore are always scavenging for the next best public release; then there are the professionals who have the advantage of complete control over the output and layout of their site, in this case their themes tend to stand the test of time and become somewhat iconic for their originality; and last of all there are the those people who really couldn’t care less, as long as their site allows people to get from A to B without problems they are quite happy.

One of the main reservations people have about changing blog themes is loosing the ‘brand’ or ‘identity’ they’ve built up. Well, to some extent I can understand this. If your blog is a big money making venture then you are subject to marketing and publicity laws. However most bloggers are happy plodding along, blurting out our daily spiel in the hope that a few stray web wanderers will stumble our way; in this case change can be beneficial as it conveys a sense of activity or ‘liveness’ to the site. My personal belief is that a personal blog should reflect the character of the person behind it…and to the best of my abilty that’s what I’ve tried to do here. I’m still tweaking the current theme, so if you find any bugs or inconsistencies please leave a comment saying what didn’t work in which browser. That would be most appreciated. You might also want to leave me your thoughts on your own blog design.
