Resurrect a Blog or Build a New One?

When I tackled how to make blogging sweeter the second time around, my suggestions were built around the idea that after your ruminations, you get to choose whether to let your blog die and move on or to resurrect your blog. There are pros and cons to both and you have to weigh all factors before you decide on one. Here are the pros and cons and I’ve encountered over time, building, rebuilding and retiring blogs:

Resurrecting a Blog

Pros: You will have readership when you restart. If you have RSS feeds via email enabled for your blog, all the better. You can contact them directly or depend on your mail feed reader to do its job. Another pro I see is backlinks. You’d still have your old backlinks in place and hence, your PR and your position in the SERPs. You can post by deriving ideas from your old postings and you can revisit old ideas and use them.

Cons: It might be hard to get your audience back. If you remember my post on how to resurrect a dying community, well, let me tell you it took a month before I got my readers back and even then, the number receded from before. It might also be hard to write from where you left off and sometimes, it might really be easier to start with a blank slate.

Building a New Blog

Pros: You’re getting a new start which means you can incorporate new ideas, new concepts and really, anything new. No one would expect anything off of your new posts because everything is new with a new blog. You can make it very different from your last blog, even if the niche is the same. You can take on a new angle, adapt a new writing style — anything goes.

Cons: You’re starting from scratch. Really, do you remember how hard it is to build a new blog? Aside from the tech stuff (design, back-end tweaks, etc), you have to promote and market again. Network with others in the niche of your new blog, build back links, make yourself known, write linkbaits, promote on social bookmarking sites, etc. In short, you’re in for a lot of hard work all over again. But if you’re up for it, hey, why not.

I, myself, have a number of blogs in various niches. However, there’s only so much I can handle. There comes a time when you just don’t consider one blog as priority over the others. Gradually, you may find the blog unattended and finally, dead. If you don’t have the time to handle all of your blogs or if with your current schedule you can only handle one blog, I hope the points for thinking above could help you out. When deciding whether to resurrect your old or build a new blog, think of it a million times before you decide on any first. Remember, blogging means dedication.
