How to Start a Role-Play Blog

Last year, I came across a vlog (video blog) in YouTube. I regret not being able to remember what it is so I can’t exactly find it again for you to see. But the video was such a hit that it was noticed by the media. It was soon found out that it was only a role-play vlog and that the girl on the video was a professional actress. It was a big issue then and the regular felt betrayed since they thought everything was real. A couple of months ago or so, I’ve seen a job listing for a role-play blog and then again this month. This reminds me of my foray into the genre early this year and my writer friend’s take on the same thing.

1. Should You Divulge…

…the fact that it’s a role-play blog or do you let people think whatever they want? It’s the first thing you should think of. If and when your project becomes successful, many aren’t going to take it well if they suddenly find out everything they’ve read is made up. I would suggest divulging upfront that it’s a role-play blog and though you don’t need to mention that fact every post, it would be prudent to include it in your blog’s “About” information.

2. Don’t Forget That You’re Not Blogging As Yourself

Put yourself in the shoes of your character ALWAYS, even while answering readers’ comments. Speaking as your character all throughout would provide a touch of verisimilitude to your character.

3. Ask Your Readers to Treat Your Character as a Real Person

Ask them to comment as if they’re talking to your character. Doing otherwise would defeat the purpose of a role-play blog.

Role-play blogs could be an artistic outlet for someone who’s inclined to write fiction. Same rules for other types of blogs are in effect such as social networking and promotion. The key here is finding the right community to network with. For role-play blogs, I would suggest seeking out writers’ communities, most particularly communities geared towards fiction-writing.
