Flickr: A Review

Mariella Posted by Mariella

It seems that recently, almost every blog I go to is teeming with pictures. Not all of them exactly upload their pics to their own servers or else they’d be having problems with space and perhaps, bandwidth in many cases. A way to circumvent this issue is to use third party photo viewers. One of those is Flickr. You only need one thing to sign up for a Flickr account — a Yahoo email address and since it’s free, there’s not much hassle signing up.

Flickr uses a sophisticated user interface. This is a picture of the usual welcome page.

Flickr greetings rotate languages every time you refresh so you get something new all the time. What’s cool about Flickr is that there are various ways to upload pics to their web site: through their upload page, the official Flickr Uploader which you’d have to install on your Mac or PC, via various plugins, through email, and finally, even through your mobile phone.

After uploading all your photos, you can then, through the “Organizer,” arrange them into sets, which could then be allotted into Groups. The photos could then be tagged according to where you shot them so you can show the rest of the world where you’ve been traveling. Flickr also allows you to set your privacy settings so you can choose if you want to share your photos with the public or hide them.

Actually, the truth is that I have a beef against Flickr for their interface. Sometimes, it doesn’t load correctly on my usual Opera browser and my rule is any web site not working properly on Opera is not worth a second visit.

However, I gave Flickr the benefit of the doubt and came back for a second visit…and a third…and a fourth…you get the picture. I still do use it now for some pictures and I would recommend Flickr to people. However, if you ask me if I’ll use Flickr for all the pics in my blogs? I have to be honest and say “no.” Truthfully, I prefer direct to the point services such as Photobucket. But that’s just me.
