Blog Action Day

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day

Today is Blog Action Day. Blog Action Day is an effort to make environmental issues more visible to the public through the use of blogs. Basically, when you join Blog Action Day, you’re given the choice to a) blog about anything regarding the environment on October 15 (that’s today), b) donate your blog revenues for the 15th to any of the organizations helping the environment, or c) spread the word about Blog Action Day. Unfortunately, I hadn’t been able to register this blog for the cause, but I don’t think it matters — I’ll participate anyways.

Through having thousands of blogs write about one subject on one day, an issue which is usually ignored (admit it, how many times have you thought about the environment within the past year?) could be magnified and hence be given proper attention. So to do my part, here’s a list of little things people should do to help the environment:

1. Don’t Litter

Do I hear some “boos” with that? Littering might seem something trivial at first glance, but if everybody’s so used to throwing away that gum wrapper over their shoulders, the small things would eventually pile up and start clogging drains which in turn would cause flooding, which in turn could cause diseases and so on and so forth. You know the drill. Chain reaction, people. Learn it.

2. Turn That Computer Off

Oh wait, we’re supposed to blog about the environment in aspects related to the blog subject. Sorry about that, I just had to get the littering thing off my chest. Okay, now back to the subject, turn your computers off when they’re not in use. And also, try not to use multiple monitors if you don’t really need them.

3. Recycle

If you get things on your PC changed, try to recycle the parts. I know, I know, it’s a hassle. But don’t just flush that old motherboard down the toilet.

4. Fluorescent Lights

If you’re using fluorescent lights (and we all know lights have to be on while we blog), try to change into incandescent bulbs instead unless you have a strong aversion to them.

5. Don’t Print

Got an important email of a blog post in one of your blog rolls you want to read? Resist the urge to print them out unless it’s truly important. Save files on your hard disk (keep a backup too) for your subsequent perusal. And for everything else you’ve printed, make sure to recycle the papers used where applicable.

And these are some tips to help the environments in our own small way as bloggers. It might seem like we can’t save the earth with these little things, but if we all worked together, small things pile up. Chain reaction, people. Just like I said earlier.
