When and How to Choose a Niche

Mariella Posted by Mariella

When you first start blogging and you’re doing it casually without the added pressure of trying to monetize your domain, you’ve probably started as a general blogger, not specializing in any particular topic. However, the more serious you get, the more you’ll realize the importance and the potential of belonging to a particular niche

When do you Specialize?

When you find yourself becoming or are already very knowledgeable on a specific topic and you’d like to write about it more than anything, you’d know it’s time to specialize. There are those who choose to build specialty blogs right from the onset, however, there are those who wait years until their blogging skills and readership grow.

How Do You Choose a Niche?

1. Are You Genuinely Interested in it?

You have to be genuinely interested and passionate about a topic to be able to sustain writing about it for the longest time. Passion shows in every post you make so the lack of it also does.

2. Is there a Market For It?

If you’re not planning on centralizing your blog on monetization, you might not even care about having a market for it, you just blog about it. However, if you plan to cash in on your blog even a little, even just to pay for your host and domain name, then you must be sure there’s a market for your topic.

3. Is the Competition Saturated?

If you do plan on monetizing your blog, you should find out if the market is saturated. If the blogosphere’s full of competitive blogs in the same niche, you’d have to think of a unique angle not taken by any of your would-be competitors and attack it from there. Basically, trying to break into the competitive market is hard but uniqueness would get you places.

And these are my tips on assessing when it’s time and how to choose a niche. Hope it’s helped people some.
