The Pros and Cons of Controversial Blog Posts
Posted by Mariella
Controversial blog posts could be anything from stating your stand on a particular issue with national or international implications to divulging secret celebrity scoops. These types of blog posts, however, have their own pros and cons.
Pros:
1. Controversial Blog Posts Rake in the Traffic
Face it, people love intrigues; it’s part of life. Controversial posts are what might bring you repeat visitors. Other than that, they are also prone to trackbacks and linking.
2. They Spark up Conversation
If your blog is community-driven and you tend to glean ideas and interact with your readers, these types of blog posts will definitely attract comments.
3. They’ll connect you with Like-minded Individuals
Sure you get to form connections with general comments. But you will only get to know people when the topic requires them to speak their minds.
4. Controversial Blog Posts are usually a Measure of just how knowledgeable you are in your niche
If you can write posts which contests the ideas of such and such or disagree with the opinions of so and so, that gives you additional brownie points. Readers might look up to you more and start considering you an authority in your niche.
Cons:
1. You cannot take Back What You Said
I actually wrote this post because of the recent news about Mattel. Apparently, they have recalled another batch of toys. Despite their continuous efforts to rectify their faults, a lot of people would remember what happened one time long ago when Mattel had to recall toys due to high lead content. It’s basically the same thing with posting controversial blog posts. Once you post it and people read it, you cannot take it back. You can edit your post if you like, but the ones who’ve already read it will not forget what you had written first.
2. It’s a Harbinger of Anonymous Comments
As much as people love intrigue, many are too scared to voice out their opinions publicly. Ergo, controversial posts seem to get the largest number of anonymous comments. Hopefully, you have a spam filter or you might get inundated with them.
It’s up to you whether you want to have a controversial take on a subject. What really matters in doing these types of posts is having the backbone to defend what you had posted. As such, it is my firm belief that no coward should attempt using this technique because you’ll bite off more than you can ever chew.
