Two reasons why I have little faith left in democracy

One. The unveiling of the London 2012 Olympics logo, which I agree is pathetic, was enough to stimulate nearly 50, 000 people to sign one of several online petitions. My point being that one of the few times the people of this country are actually stirred up enough to shout back at the powers that be, it’s over a logo for a sporting event…so has it made any difference? Well the petition organiser had this to say:
“I have decided to close the petition as it becomes clear that the logo is here to stay – there is little point in damaging the reputation of our Olympic Games, that was never the intention. The protest has been effectively made.”
The protest has been effectively made? Can someone explain to me what is effective about 50, 000 people signing a petition that doesn’t even make the people at fault so much as bat an eyelid? What better example of an impotent democratic system than one in which its citizens are happy to pour the little political power they have into trivial pursuits rather than address the bigger issues at hand such as demanding more political transparency, bringing people closer to political decision making, challenging the extent of corporate power etc etc.
Two. Paris Hilton was released from jail some 3 weeks short of finishing her prison sentence. I don’t make a point of reading the evening rag-mags that get shoved in your face at every street corner in this city, but it’s hard to avoid looking at them because they litter the floor of every London bus and train. So apparently she was feeling lonely and depressed in her cell: no shit Sherlock! What was she expecting…a penthouse suite? The point here being that fame and riches are enough to elevate you above the law…pffft and there was me thinking that prison might actually make this woman see the world from another angle, instill her with an iota of savvy, wrong again.
